What is CCTV?

CCTV stands for ‘Closed Circuit Television’. While a CCTV system includes cameras, monitors and recording devices just like regular TV production, there’s no transmission of the video footage to an audience as there is with broadcast or streaming TV. Instead, the cameras are set up to capture video, the recording device records the video, and the footage can be played back for private viewing on the monitor(s).

What is CCTV for?

CCTV is used for security because it gives you two things that help you keep your property secure. Firstly, you have a deterrent from high visibility cameras and warning signs announcing that CCTV is in use. Secondly, the footage captured by the cameras can be invaluable in helping identify and prosecute offenders caught doing anything illegal.

So, with that in mind, what does a good quality CCTV system need to include?

CCTV cameras need to capture high quality video during the day and at night. There’s no point capturing footage of someone breaking into your car if the video is so low resolution, grainy or dark that you can’t even tell if it’s a man or a woman.

CCTV cameras should be robust enough to shrug off the worst weather. They can be static cameras that watch a fixed area, or PTZ cameras that can pan from side to side, tilt up and down or zoom in on anything in their field of view. But PTZ cameras need to be controlled by an operator monitoring them or set to move in fixed patterns to watch a larger area.
