Gate Intercom System Repairs
Do you need gate intercom repairs?
If the communication system between your electric gates and your home isn’t working, you can no longer see or talk to you visitors via that intercom system.
Two of the main types of intercom repairs we carry out most regularly are fixing issues with the communication between the gate call unit and the house receiver or mobile phone app, and repairing vandalised gate call units.
Call 0800 195 1470 for a chat or use the form to give us more information.
We provide professional but fairly priced repairs for all types of remote controls, transmitters, gate remotes and their corresponding receivers.
How Can We Help?
Repairs to Vandalised Intercoms
Vandalism does occur but it is rarer than communication problems between the gate call unit and house receiver. In many cases, gate intercoms are installed in more affluent areas where the likelihood of vandalism is lower. However, in tower blocks and flats where there’s a larger population and much more frequent use, deliberate damage is not unknown.
Repairing most vandalism damage usually requires the replacement of the complete call unit. Modular units may be repairable by replacing individual components or the unit housing, but this can lead to later issues. It’s usually best practice to simply replace the entire call unit.
Anti-vandal call units can be specified to reduce the risk of damage. These use stronger housings and protected buttons.
If you don’t want to test your broken gate remotes yourself, call us on 0800 195 1470 or email info@egrl.co.uk. Give us details of your problem and we’ll help with your gate intercom repairs.
Fixing Intercom Communication Failures
There are a few different issues intercoms experience depending on the way the gate call unit communicates with the house receiver.
Wired Intercom Repairs
Wired intercom systems are hard wired between the call unit and receiver. When a visitor rings the house from the gate call unit to get let in through the electric gates, the wires send signals to the house receiver. If there’s video as well as audio communication between the two intercom system components, these signals are also sent down the wires.
Wired intercom system breakdowns are usually caused by corrosion caused when water gets to the wire terminals. If the exposed cable ends at the contact points become corroded, the electrical signals the intercom system sends may be interrupted. This means that the communication becomes difficult or stops completely.
Wires can also get cut by builders carrying out groundwork on the drive or landscapers working on the garden. Digging into the drive or garden can accidentally sever the intercom communication wires which immediately stops all communication between the gate and the house.
Wireless Intercom Repairs
As the name suggests, wireless intercoms communicate without the need for wires. Commonly used wireless systems use radio, Wi-Fi and GSM to communicate. Radio signals are like those used by your gate fob transmitters, Wi-Fi is like your internet and TV Wi-Fi in your home and GSM is what your smartphone uses.
Intercoms that use radio or Wi-Fi will have a standard-looking receiver or receivers in the house. If your intercom uses GSM, you may be using an app on your phone as the receiver.
Radio communication is usually robust although interference from badly supressed electrical devices can affect the signal. There’s a process for troubleshooting possible electrical interference on our transmitter repairs page here.
Intercom problems with Wi-Fi and GSM wireless systems are more often caused by setup problems or hardware failures.
WiFi Intercom Repairs
WiFi intercoms use a router like your internet WiFi router. If there’s a problem with a WiFi intercom, you can try a few simple processes yourself. The first one is to simply switch off the router your intercom is using, leave it off for a few minutes and then switch it back on.
As this is closed system which isn’t receiving data from outside (like internet or TV), there’s no need to test your broadband speed.
Beyond this simple test, there are more involved approaches to diagnosing WiFi intercom problems that are probably best left to a qualified installer. If you can’t get hold of the company that installed your intercom or you’ve moved into a house with one and don’t know who installed it, we can help.
GSM Intercom Repairs
Like WiFi intercoms, GSM intercoms rely on signals sent through the air rather than down wires. You’ll have a Simm card and a contract as you have with your mobile phone, so it’s worth checking that this is still being paid for and is connected first. You can also make sure that the Simm is seated correctly and the terminals on it are clean. We have seen issues where a skilled drink has gummed up the works and affected a GSM intercom systems ability to communicate properly.
If everything is in contract and clean, it’s wise to call out a qualified gate intercom engineer to fix the problem. They will have the right tools to diagnose the problem and access to the right equipment needed to fix your electric gate intercom system.
