Replacement Or Repairs For Gate Remotes

Gate Transmitter and Receiver Repairs

Damaged gates hit by vehicle

Do you need gate transmitter repairs?

Most owners of electric gates use a hand-held transmitter (sometimes called a gate remote fob) to open and close their automatic gates.

Press a button on them and they send a signal to a receiver in the gate control system which instructs the gates to operate.

But if your gate remote transmitter stops working or the battery dies, what are your options?

Hopefully you have a spare remote control gate fob. You can use this while you wait for a replacement or fix the first transmitter. But if the receiver fails so that neither works or you only had one working gate transmitter, what are your options?

You can contact us now for gate transmitter repairs or try out some of our troubleshooting suggestions below.

Call 0800 195 1470 for a chat or use the form to give us more information.

We provide professional but fairly priced repairs for all types of remote controls, transmitters, gate remotes and their corresponding receivers.

Why Don’t My Gate Transmitters Work?

There are a few reasons why your gate transmitters might not work. If you want to try and troubleshoot your gate remote problems, there is a sequence of tests you can carry out. These should be done in the order listed here to eliminate possible issues before moving onto the next test.

The first test for broken or non-working gate remotes is simple. Step two requires a little patience and a methodical approach. Our third test requires some specialist knowledge and test equipment which is usually more than most homeowners possess.

If you don’t want to test your broken gate remotes yourself, call us on 800 195 1470 or email info@egrl.co.uk. Give us details of your problem and we’ll help with your gate transmitter repairs.

How Do I Open My Gates If My Transmitters Don’t Work?

When your electric gate remotes stop working, you have three main options for opening your electric gates.

First, call out a gate engineer to diagnose and repair your gate transmitters. Alternatively, run through a few tests to try and work out where the problem is yourself.  There’s a troubleshooting process for you to follow further down this page. While this may identify the problem, it doesn’t guarantee that you can fix it yourself.

So, if you’re still stuck with electric gates that don’t respond to your gate remotes, what do you do if you want to open them?

    Manual Release Systems

Your best solution is to use the manual release system built into your gate motors. This partially disconnects the gate motor drive from the gates. But it also leaves some resistance so that you can safely open them by hand. Until you have sorted out the gate transmitter problems, you should reset the manual release with your gates locked into the open position.

Professionally installed automatic gate systems should include a manual release system. To operate it you insert a manual release key into the lock. This is usually on the gate motor housing or in the motor arm connection to the gate.

With the manual release system unlocked, push your gates open or closed. The gates can’t move dangerously; they still need a little effort to push them. And as you’ve disconnected the gates from the motors, you won’t do any damage.

As any manual release system could help you get out of difficulty, it is wise to have your gates serviced regularly. You then know it will work if you need it. It’s a good idea for anyone who might need to manually open the gates to know where the key is stored and how they should use it.

What If My Gate Transmitters Aren’t Made Any More?

As technology marches ever forward, newer models replace older gate transmitters. Usually, this means that there’s a direct replacement for your obsolete, broken or lost gate remote. As long as you have a second remote that you can use to program the new replacement, you’re OK. You can even buy aftermarket cloning remotes that can copy a range of manufacturers’ gate remote models.

However, when there’s only one working remote that gets lost or broken, or if there’s no direct replacement for your model because the radio frequency is no longer used, what can you do?

All is not lost. Gate transmitters send their signals to a receiver, so you can buy a kit that includes new remotes and a matching receiver. Where old technology or unused radio frequencies make matching new remotes to the existing receiver impossible, a gate installer can replace the receiver and transmitters together.

How To Test Broken Electric Gate Remotes

    1: Test the gate remote

The first test is the most obvious one. Pop open the gate remote housing and replace the battery. Because they’re not used a lot, gate remote batteries can last a long time but they will eventually need replacing. If the one you use all the time doesn’t respond to a new battery, it is still worth replacing the one in your spare remote and giving that a go.

It’s time to move onto test number 2 if that doesn’t get your gates working.

    2: Check for interference

Interference is usually rare but it can happen. As gate remotes send a radio signal to the receiver, electrical devices may affect this signal.

You need to do this test methodically to have any chance of identifying a possible source or radio interference so we’ve mapped out the steps you need to follow:

    The Procedure

    1. Turn off all the electrical devices and systems that work near your gates and give both your gate remotes a try. If they still don’t work, interference is not causing the problem so you can turn the electrical items back on.
    2. However, if your gate remotes work when everything is turned off, interference could be the problem. You now need to methodically try to identify which electrical item is interfering with the remote radio signal.
    3. Now turn on one electrical item at a time and try your gate remotes. If the gates still work, leave the first electrical device on and switch on the second. Try your gate remotes again. If the gate remotes work, leave the second device on as well as the first and try the third. Repeat the process until you find an electric item that causes the gate remotes to stop working when it’s switched on.
    4. You can now double check if you’ve found the cause of the interference. With everything else switched off except the suspected cause of the interference, the gate remotes shouldn’t operate your gates. When you switch on everything except the suspected item, the gate remotes should work. If you then also switch on the offending item, the gate remotes should not be able to operate the gates again.

Now that you’ve identified that interference is probably the cause of the problem, call a gate installer out or ask the manufacturer of the offending electrical item for their advice.

Finally, if the gate remotes still didn’t operate the gate with all electrical systems near the gate shut off, interference is unlikely to be the problem and it’s time for test 3.

    3: Test the receiver

Without the appropriate equipment and knowledge, this test is not easy for most people. The receiver is built into control system of your electric gates. Your gate remotes send radio signals to it and it translates these into electrical instructions for the gate motors. If you eliminate transmitter problems and don’t think it’s interference, this is probably the right time to call in a gate engineer.
